Brief Biography

Sam has been “convening great conversations” since 1971 with corporate leaders and individuals.  He has twenty five years experience in industry, health care and education. He excels in rapid organization redesign and leadership education, as well as identifying and resolving core issues, patterns, structures and relationships that prevent organizations and individuals from achieving their goals. Sam creates profound connections between people, ideas and work.

Sam is a senior practitioner in consulting and executive coaching for organizational change, leadership, collaboration and performance.  He views the human aspects of organizations and technical / structural issues as inseparable and is known for helping people move beyond common organization divisiveness that hampers individual development and group performance.

Prior to the past ten years as a successful independent consultant and coach, Sam worked for The Boeing Company for nine years as an executive coach, internal consultant and coordinator for high potential managers. In earlier years, Sam work for the University of Washington Continuing Education as Acting Director for nine years, and the State of California in Grant Administration and the Sacramento Medical Center in organizational development. Sam has associated himself with Peter Block / AQP School for Managing, The Axelrod Group, Parliament of World Religions in Kenya and Spain, Fetzer Institute and The Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara. He teaches at The Hudson Institute, The Whidbey Institute and The Center for Creative Change at Antioch University-Seattle.

Sam holds a B.A. in Biology, University of California, Santa Cruz and a MBA at the California State University, Hayward.  He is also a certified coach through The Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara and certified in use of EQinAction, a leading instrument used to develop emotional intelligence in high pressure leadership situation. The International Coaching Federation has recognized Sam at their highest level, a Master Certified Coach (MCC).

Sam’s personal interests continually enhance his capacity to observe what is happening in organizations. Besides a solid management background, Sam is a published poet and is a serious amateur photographer who has successfully entered work in juried art shows. Sam is an avid outdoor adventurer and travels extensively in order to learn more about people.

The Boeing Company. Senior internal consultant supporting division president in establishing collaboration among executives, middle managers and hourly workers and for organization mergers.  Teacher and consultant for team building, performance evaluation methods and instruction, large scale learning events, large scale planning events.  Coach to leaders and co-workers. Application of various systems theories and of conversations which result in leadership and action.  Organization development group manager.

1982 – Present

Episcopal Church leadership and congregation development.  Principle author of Living into Our Ministries, The Mutual Ministry Cycle. Speaker at clergy retreats, coach to rectors and senior wardens, consulting on leadership and mutual ministry.

1979- 1988
